The gahtering at Hathras satsang was a religious event where people came to meet and hear the preaching’s of Bhole Baba. In the biggest such catastrophe in recent history, 121 people lost their lives in a stampede at the religious congregation, Uttar Pradesh, on July 2. The victims suffocated to their death and the bodies were stacked on top of each other. Following a “satsang” led by a preacher known as “Bhole Baba” in the district’s Phulrai village, a stampede occurred while people were returning home.

Background; Who is Bhole Baba?
The spiritual preacher Suraj Pal, also known as “Bhole Baba” or “Narayan Sakar Hari,” comes from the Uttar Pradeshi village of Bahadur Nagar, which is in the Patiyali tehsil of the Kasganj district.
His supporters hail from various regions in the western and central regions of the State as well as its neighboring States. Notable political figures have also been spotted on his shows. According to informed sources, Mr. Pal served as an Uttar Pradesh Police constable in the local intelligence section until the 1990s, at which point he took up spirituality, changed his identity, and began giving speeches in public about living a devout life. He urged his followers to discover the Almighty inside and identified himself as a follower of Narayan Sakar Hari.

What happened at Hathras satsang?
After the Uttar Pradesh Police conducted a search operation at Ram Kutir Charitable Trust in Mainpuri district in search of the self-styled godman, who hosted a Satsang in Hathras where a stampede occurred, Deputy Superintendent of Police Sunil Kumar said that Bhole Baba could not be located.
“We did not find Baba ji inside the campus…He is not here…” – Sunil Kumar.
Around 3:30 p.m., when Bhole Baba was exiting the arena, there was a stampede. Yogi Adityanath, the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, has instructed district officials to expedite relief efforts. Also, he gave the order to look into the event.
The Bhole Baba was not allegedly mentioned in the Uttar Pradesh Police’s FIR against the organizers, which was filed on Wednesday.
A senior official informed news agency PTI that the first information report (FIR) lodged at the Sikandara Rao police station late on Tuesday names “Mukhya sevadar” Devprakash Madhukar and other organizers.
Aftermath
Prime Minister Narendra Modi sent his condolences to the families of those killed in the stampede in Hathras and wished the injured people a quick recovery. After the incident, Yogi Adityanath, the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, also had a conversation with Modi. Germany, France, China, and Israel were among the nations whose envoys expressed their sorrow for the deaths in the stampede and their sympathies to the families of the dead.
In a post on X, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar expressed his profound sadness over the tragic tragedy.
The government was questioned by Samajwadi Party MP Akhilesh Yadav regarding the arrangements when it was known that there would be a sizable crowd at an event.
