New Delhi:

The Delhi High Court denied the Delhi CM’s bail in a corruption case involving the Delhi Liquor Policy, pending a hearing on the Enforcement Directorate’s plea. Within hours of his scheduled release from Tihar jail, the investigation agency contested his bail. The ED called for an immediate hearing before a bench of Justices Sudhir Kumar Jain and Ravinder Dudeja, citing its plea contesting the trial court’s bail ruling.

Background:

Following several rounds of bail denials in trial courts for Mr. Arvind, the bail was finally granted. Despite demands for his resignation from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, he has not resigned as Chief Minister of Delhi.

He was was granted temporary bail by the Supreme Court in May so that he may campaign for the election. Two days prior to the announcement of the findings, he was back in prison.

The controversy stems from Delhi CM’s involvement in the formulation of Delhi’s 2021–2022 liquor strategy, which was subsequently withdrawn following objections from the Lieutenant Governor. The ED alleges that funds received from liquor vendors were misappropriated to finance political campaigns in Goa, an accusation vehemently denied by Mr. Arvind and his party, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

Current Status of Kejriwal’s Bail Order:

Delhi court, yesterday authorized Delhi CM’s release on a ₹1 lakh personal bail. However, the court placed restrictions on his release, stating that he would not attempt to obstruct the investigation or sway the witnesses. Mr. Arvind argued before the court that not enough evidence had been submitted by the investigating agency since the Chief Minister of Delhi was arrested on March 21.

AAP leaders and Delhi CM’s wife, were scheduled to meet the Delhi Chief Minister at Tihar Jail today at 4 p.m.
